If you want him back and have so little self respect that you'll take him back in any capacity, even calls then by all means go for it. If on the other hand you really feel that he doesn't deserve you as you said and you feel that you don't want to be stepped on again then it's best to let him go. Don't lie to yourself and say that he will change or that he has changed because that's just your attempts at self justification.
