What do these stars mean?!?

Sounds to me like Hex Signs. Farmers used to (still do) hang Hex signs on barns to keep evil spirits away. These are often used by Pennsylvania Dutch farmers. Different symbols used on Hex sign serve different functions. A star symbol on a Hex sign is used to ward off fires and also ensures good fortune, hope and fertlity (for the animals).
