What are Sai's ninjitsu really used for?

I dont really understand Sai's ninjitsu powers, where he draws pictures of animals and make them fight, but they always break down extremely easily, and they never seem to actually do any damage. besides scouting and looking around the area, do they have any purpose or fighting capabilities? BTW Sai from Naruto.
